Item description for A Lifetime of Wisdom: Embracing the Way God Heals You by Joni Eareckson Tada...

Overview
Looking back to the diving accident at 17 that destined her for a lifetime in a wheelchair, Tada recalls the bitterness and despair she felt and how God healed her in unexpected ways.

Publishers Description
It's not what I lost. It's what I've found.I was only seventeen, just a girl, when God asked me for everything I had ... my health, my hopes, my independence, my dreams, my freedom, and my mobility. He took it all. I was so angry with Him that I tried to push Him away. God relentlessly held me more closely.Looking back, forty years later, I understand that God has changed and healed me---my heart and my mind---in the most unexpected ways, giving me rubies of His wisdom about an unbending faith and an experience of His mercy I can now tell you about. Was it a fair exchange, my freedom and no wheelchair for the rubies of wisdom I've been given? Absolutely. In this I have learned at the feet of the Lord Jesus, embracing the way that God heals us, even when we rage at Him in anger, fear, and despair. This book is not about what I lost in that diving accident so long ago. It's about the wisdom He's given me to live life victoriously in the face of disappointments and challenges that we all face.

From Publishers Weekly
When a diving accident in 1967 paralyzed her from the neck down, Tada, then a teenager, questioned God and life itself. Decades later, the author and founder of Joni and Friends ministry for the disabled writes from her wheelchair that there are more important things in life than walking. In her latest book, Tada jumps back in time to reveal her thoughts as a young quadriplegic, then pleads with her teenage self and the reader to be patient and hopeful. In each chapter, Tada offers a ruby of her own hard-won wisdom (e.g., God may not always provide healing; courage in the midst of suffering is a testament to Gods love; God gives grace in tough times) and encourages readers to dialogue with God to understand the purpose for hardships. Tada then supports this argument about suffering with Scripture, folding some verses into the chapters and compiling others into three appendices. Those who are ill, struggling or hopeless may be comforted by her testimony and perhaps roused to pray and perform good deeds while awaiting relief in whatever form it may take. (Mar.) Reviews - What do customers think about Lifetime Of Wisdom?

Wise Indeed  May 24, 2010
This book is so honest and Joni is so transparent that people who have experienced or are experiencing intense - INTENSE - suffering find truth here. Joni is a Godsend for people whose lives don't mirror the fake "victorious Christian living" model that so many Christian leaders tout. Those who have to live daily with pain and suffering, or alongside people they love who are suffering, will find this book to be powerful and poignant. I read it twice, and often flip back to certain passages. Thank God for Joni and her life and witness. There are so many people who need the truth about God's healing today.

Excellent book  Oct 30, 2009
I highly recommend this book to anyone that has or knows someone who has a physical problem. We are all broken in one way or another. Embracing the Way God Heals You will help you to not feel sorry for yourself but to look at what God has given you and how you can use what you do have to honor Him. It will help you turn an "I can't" attitude to an "I can" attitude. Once you read one of Joni Eareckson Tada's books, you will want to read them all.

"A Lifetime of Wisdom:Embracing the Way God Heals You"  Oct 12, 2009
Joni has been a quadrapeligic for 40 years since a diving accident at
age 18. In spite of complete dependance on others to survive, she has had a global ministry. She takes wheelchairs to those who cannot afford one and offers hope and encouragement from lessons hard won.
God has not given her back her mobility, but He has given her something much richer;
a peace in His presence and years of Wisdom gained through her obediance to God's
purpose for her life. This is a "must read" for anyone wondering what their purpose is while on this earth.

Lessons Learned  Oct 3, 2009
The author, Joni Eareckson Tada, was only seventeen when she became paralyzed after a diving accident. She says God asked her for everything she had....health, hopes, independence, dreams, freedom, and mobility. At first she was angry...

More than forty years later, thru trials, disappointments, challenges, and fear, this amazing woman has produced her best book yet. A lifetime in a wheelchair has enabled her to share with us, some of the wisdom she has acquired about her faith in God.

Along with her autobiography, "The God I Love", Joni, an accomplished artist, musician, author of many inspirational books, is also an international disability advocate. She once told God "I can't live like this. If You won't let me die, then show me how to live". He did. She listened. The world loves this beautiful woman.

Reader, if you need more proof that our creator God indeed exists, check out this book and the resource pages Joni provides in back of the book that will inspire you to rise above your present circumstances. Joni's lifetime of wisdom "lifts us higher" and she has learned how to do it as a quadriplegic. You cannot help but love her and all those who have assisted her over the decades, including her devoted husband.

God's Love Never Fails  Jul 26, 2009
Emotional healing through the love of God in the midst of overwhelmning suffering, unites one with God in the valleys. He is the God of the valleys and He says He is the Lord, the God of all flesh, and there is nothing to hard for Him. Jeremiah 32:27 Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is there anything too hard for Me?

Joni takes you into her journey, as each chapter starts with a trauma scene from Tada's past, written in the present tense. For example, in a hospital feeling as if someone is suffocating her in the middle of the night; a month later, after a surgery, feeling the impact of being alone, and afraid, slipping into despair; on another day when a friend visits and reads a favorite Bible passage; ten years later, when she speaks to prisoners at a correctional facility in Northern Virginia. "I told them how weak-kneed I sometimes got when I thought about living twenty or even thirty more years in a wheelchair."

Joni tells servere trials physically. In the chapter titled "Sufficient Grace" that starts in a prison setting, she reflects: "I'll admit it, the long years haven't made paralysis any easier."

This book is about spiritual and physical struggles, where Jesus never abandons us. Some people get angry at God and turn away, but like Job, Joni has allowed the healing Jesus to sustain her. Joni illustrates how the Holy Spirit has worked in her to will and to do of His good pleasure.

Ephesians 6:10-17
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Romans 6:5
For if we have grown into union with him through a death like His, we shall also be united with him in the resurrection.

Romans 6:8
If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him

Joni had to seek spiritual strength in the word of God. There is a helpful resource to target physical disabilities and allow the Holy Spirit to work for you, in James Riddle's The Complete Personalized Promise Bible on Health and Healing: Every Promise in the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, Personalized and Written As a Prayer Just for You. The scriptures help you know the promises of God, and the prayers on the scriptures will work in your physcial body as well as your emotions, beginning in your spirit.
