Reviews - What do customers think about Basics Of Biblical Hebrew Grammar?

Loving It!  Mar 19, 2007
Most say that Hebrew is easy than Greek. Let's say that this volume is confirming that. After doing my grad. work in Greek, I find this statement to be true.

This volume is vary user-friendly. As noted, it is built on the tradition of Mounce's Grammar, in fact, he has helped on this.

Get this Hebrew Grammar, if you are getting started!

Good beginner grammar  Feb 22, 2007
I'm beginning to see why my seminary professor is using this grammar over Seow (more technical) despite using the traditional teaching model of Imperfect, Perfect, and Waw Conversive, with which the professor disagreed. The text is practical and very useful, especially with the accompanying workbook for homework.

One of the best parts of the book for me is the end of each chapter where a scholar or pastor (mostly connected with Gordon-Conwell) exegetes a particular word that relates to the chapter and gives an insight based on the Hebrew language.

Not for beginners, but excellent for reference for the advanced student.  Feb 20, 2007
The other reviewers have basically made the most important points. I will only add a couple more points.

1. IMHO, this book is not for beginners. If you're first learning to read Biblical Hebrew, then I would recommend using a book that is considered a Hebrew primer, and not this book. After studying the primer, then you can use this book, but I would probably recommend Page H. Kelly's "Biblical Hebrew: An introductory Grammar" or Thomas O. Lambdin's "Intro to Biblical Hebrew" over this book for those who are still in their first year of Biblical Hebrew study.

2. This book is more designed with it's lay out for those who already have experience in Hebrew, and it's even better designed for those who have 1+ year of Hebrew under their belt, and can make great use of this book as a basic reference book. For those of you who have studied Hebrew for more than a couple of years and have seen this book, you know what I mean.

3. If you get this book, I recommend getting the workbook along with it, as you will need plenty of reading practice to apply the rules of Grammar presented in this book.

4. Something else that should be noted is the pronunciation used in this book is NOT Sephardic (the main modern dialect of pronunciation in Israel tody), but rather the pronuciation introduced in this volume is that of "old Hebrew", and more closely resembles Aramaic than Hebrew.

In case if anyone is wondering, I gave this book 3 stars only because it's being presented as a guide for beginners at Hebrew, when in reality this book can be cumbersome for the beginning student of Hebrew.

Wonderful!  Jan 9, 2007
I don't know much about other grammars. This is the first I've used by I think that it is very easy to use for a beginning Hebrew student and for the reference of a more advanced scholar. Well-organized, accurate, etc.

A satisfying introduction to Hebrew  Dec 18, 2006
Of the innumerable Hebrew courses out there, this course offers a thorough grounding in the Hebrew language, and avoids the pitfalls of being either overly simplistic or overly technical. The authors have a gift for logical clarity and their explanations of complex Hebrew grammar are clear and comprehensive. The strength of the work lies in the clarity of expression. The authors know how to explain difficult Hebrew, without falling into a common pitfall of trying to AVOID Hebrew grammar.

The grammar is supplemented by a must-have workbook (ISBN 0310237017) and a useful website that offers additional resource materials. In addition one can purchase a CD which contains all the vocabulary necessary for the grammar and exercises (ISBN:10 031027074X). The exercises are all based on the biblical text which is better than spending pointless hours on imaginary Hebrew. In addition, the grammar itself includes a CD which has a program called Teknia, another useful resource for learning vocabulary.

The most impressive aspect of the BASICS course is the Hebrew Lectures based upon it that can be procured through Semlink (which is linked to Gordon-Conwell Seminary.) The course can be taken either through the Seminary as a credit, or as a non credit course. Self-learners will want to select the latter option. For a very low price one can purchase these lectures which cover the entire textbook. These lectures are done brilliantly, with clear PowerPoint slides that are shown as the lecture is being presented. (Bill Mounce offers a similar lecture course for his 'Basics of Biblical Greek', although Practico has the advantage of offering visual lectures as opposed to mere audio.)

With such quality material, learning Hebrew becomes a joy, and something one can do entirely on one's own. In short, while there are other Hebrew courses out there, few can compare with this in terms of quality and its many luminary moments.
