Cassie Griffin's husband, Griff died and suddenly as her husband is laid to rest, virtually every man in town shows up, demanding Cassie marry him--right away. Griff left Cassie heavily in debt, pregnant, and homeless, and every man in town wants a "turn" with the "China Doll."
"Red" Dawson has long admired the "China Doll" but figures he'll never marry her. After all, he's a minister, and can't marry an unbeliever. But still, he's the one that ends up married that day... Red is determined to treat Cassie well, but well, sometimes it is hard because the only thing Cassie is good at is cooking. She brings mayhem everywhere else on the ranch and is turning even Red's mildest horse into a nerves wreck.
When another local cowboy who was denied the "China Doll" begins stalking her, suddenly Red finds his life in danger, and Cassie living in fear. What will it take to be set free from this nightmare?
MONTANA ROSE is the first book in Ms. Connealy's Montana Marriages series, and it is loosely based on Ms. Janette Oke's Love Comes Softly series. MONTANA ROSE is filled with laugh out loud moments and mayhem, and with non-stop action. I literally couldn't put MONTANA ROSE down.
Cassie is a real sweetheart, totally different than the "China Doll" image that most of the town folk had of her, and her first husband was abusive, so she learned to read signals and try to be that kind of wife, so she wouldn't get knocked around. Red is a real sweet hero, but sometimes he became a bit difficult, so he did have some flaws. I enjoyed getting to know both of these characters and think this is the best book by this author I've read to date. This is my first full book of this author's and I must say I LOVED it! It contains not only good Christian teaching without being preachy, but also a great storyline and humor. It caused me to think about some of my beliefs and actions and really left me feeling good when I finished it.

I've had the pleasure of "meeting" Mary Connealy online when she graciously offered to send out copies of her Lassoed in Texas series to military families. I became hooked. It's been a while since I've read a book that made me laugh out loud, and not just a chuckle, I'm talking a big belly laugh. And Mary doesn't pull any punches with her heroines. These gals are willing to stand up to the hero, with a gun if needs be.
Mary took a different approach this time around with her new heroine, Cassie Griffin. Around town, Cassie has become the "China Doll", a woman so standoffish, people despise her and her silk dresses. Yet what the town's people don't see is the abuse, the neglect, and the shame brought down on Cassie by her now deceased husband, a man no one respected because he thought himself above them all.
The hero, Red Dawson, sees another side to Cassie. And in attempt to save her from the cruelest man in town, Red proposes marriage. Upon taking her to his home, Red soon learns Cassie and his farm animals soon equal disaster. To save himself the trouble, he starts to rein in what she can and can't do. But with time, Red's eyes are opened to the real reason Cassie is prone to disaster. And he nearly loses her to a man obsessed with her by some misguided notion they are one and the same.
