Outline
Determination, faith, and optimism are powerful forces that enable individuals to positively affect the lives of themselves and others. Christy, a captivating 1994 television series based on the book by Catherine Marshall and reminiscent of the Anne of Green Gables and Little House on the Prairie series, is the story of an idealistic 19-year-old woman named Christy Huddleston (Kellie Martin) who sets out for the wilderness of the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee in 1912 on a mission to educate the children of the remote community of Cutter Gap. A well-to-do girl raised in the city, Christy is shocked and completely unprepared for the extreme poverty, ignorance, and superstitious tendencies of Cutter Gap's people, but resolves to persevere in her commitment to better the lives of her young students. Each day brings a fresh lesson for the children and a new struggle that inspires Christy to draw upon and re-examine her own faith while striving to disprove local superstitions and replace long-held animosities and prejudices with virtues like forgiveness and respect. Christy is surrounded by a handful of allies in Cutter Gap that include fellow missionary Miss Alice Henderson (Tyne Daly), whom she idolizes for her strength, resolve, and mentorship; Fairlight Spencer (Tess Harper), a local woman who offers Christy the rare gift of friendship; mission preacher Reverend David Grantland (Randall Batinkoff), a hard worker who immediately becomes smitten with Christy; and local Doctor Neil MacNeill (Stewart Finlay-McLennan) whose gruff manner and atheistic beliefs both confuse and excite Christy. Eventually, Christy finds she's fallen in love with both Reverend Grantland and Doctor MacNeill and embarks on a very personal journey toward maturity while simultaneously succeeding in her quest to educate the children of Cutter Gap and affect significant positive change throughout the entire community. Reviews - What do customers think about Christy: The Complete Series (4 DVD)?

Christy  Mar 27, 2007
First off - go buy this dvd from Wal-Mart. It is only $20 there. Second off, I have waited FOREVER for this to come out on dvd. I'm thrilled that I now own it, but it doesn't seem to be the quality of of dvd that it could be. There are no extras whatsever. The menu screen doesn't even play music or anything. They just posted a picture up there and figured that would be enough. I see so much more that they could have done with this. The box itself seems to be cheaply made. It is kind of disappointing.

This is still my favorite series ever, and was so beautifully filmed w/ a great cast. I wish they could have done a reunion show or something. I just finished rewatching all the series, and I was once again heartbroken at the end when they just end the series with her standing between Dr. McNiell (whom I'd choose - sexy accent!), and David Grantland. I just knew it'd have a different ending this time even though I knew exactly what was coming.

Great Series -- Poor DVD's  Mar 26, 2007
I, like many others have been waiting many years for the DVD release of this series. It was filmed in Townsend, TN just outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park which is only a few miles from my home. My wife worked as a seamstress in the wardrobe department for all episodes and spoke highly of the cast and crew. As for the series it is one of my favorites.

The DVD's are another story. The 4 discs in the set are TWO-SIDED and there are ZERO EXTRAS included.

WHOLESOME, FAMILY FRIENDLY, TV SHOW!!  Mar 25, 2007
I watched this series when it was being played around with by CBS in 1994. CBS wanted garbage like CSI and SURVIVOR to attract younger viewers never appreciating the quality series they had in Christy! I'm so happy to see this television show come out on DVD! Heartwarming, sensible, worthy tv-watching for the whole family. Kellie Martin is an appealing Christy and Tyne Daly as Miss Alice is unforgettable! Shame on CBS for pulling the plug on this great series and bravo for finally getting it out on DVD!!

Charming, Scenic, Relationships.  Mar 4, 2007

Set in the smokey mountains of Tennessee in 1912. A young lady comes from the city to start a school for the children of the rugged, poor, mountain community. She faces hardships, but is helped by a woman who provides her lodging, Ms. Alice. She is also helped by a young Irish doctor, Dr. Neil MacNeil, and a young preacher, David. Drama and relationships. Scenic. I enjoyed this series of 15 hours.

The three sequels:
I did not like the three Christy sequels, with the different actress as Christy, Lauren Lee Smith: "Christy a New Beginning", "Return to Cutter Gap", and "A Change of Seasons". Though these three sequels are the same setting, with the same doctor; the stories are just not interesting. Substituting a successful actor never works. They would have done better to have Christy leave, and a new girl by another name, say Gwendolen, come teach in her place, rather than substituting Christys and relying upon the audience to use their imagination. They relied upon the audience to imagine better scripts as well.

Another good period series is "Road to Avonlea".

Warm and Family Friendly Television  Mar 4, 2007
This gentle and heartfelt drama was wholesome and substantive television for families. Based on the cherished book by Catherine Marshall detailing her mother's time in the Tennessee Smoky Mountains in 1912, it is the story of a young and exuberant city girl who comes to teach in poverty-striken Cutter Gap and the manner in which it changed her life forever.

The book was warm and wonderful and those like myself who loved it had doubts that the essence of it could truly be captured for television. It was a pleasant surprise when those doubts were proven to have no validity. It was faithful in conveying both the feelings and the atmosphere of the book and, for many, including myself, Kellie Martin will always be Christy Huddelston. Her wide-eyed and hopeful performance was perfect, and Tyne Daly added emotional depth as Miss Alice, the Quaker woman who had seen heartache before yet found the strength to carry on.

The wonderful Tess Harper portrayed the sensible and delicate Fairlight Spencer, who offered Christy the most cherished gift of those great mountains; her friendship. There was a wholesome and romantic glow to this series as the hardships these people experienced in their lives every day and the sometimes illegal means they used to survive came into conflict with the teachings of the young Minister, David (Randall Batinkoff), who is smitten with Christy.

But the older doctor who understood the people of Cutter Gap better may be the one Christy would find love with if she could hold on to the joy that brought her there. Stewart Finlay-McLennan had a nice turn as Doc Neil, who had some feelings of his own for young Christy. But it was the children and their teacher who took center stage as Christy faced opposition which kept some of the children away. None of them had shoes and sometimes very little to eat, but nearly all of them had a thirst for knowledge.

Her greatest challenge was a little girl who did not speak and an older boy whose father was the worst of the moonshiners. He acted like a bully because it was what he had been taught. But when Christy caught him reading David Copperfield and talking angrily about making something of himself from nothing in the pilot film, she knew there was hope. The attempted destruction of the schoolhouse brought everything to a boiling point at the beginning, and Christy had to decide once and for all whether to stay or leave forever.

The greens and blues of the beautiful Smoky Mountains were romantically photographed by Mike Fash in director Michael Rhodes' warmhearted remembrance of this young and pretty teacher who came to Cutter Gap and made a difference. Kellie Martin's voice-over added warmth and understanding to Christy's emotional journey into a place she would come to call home.

Patricia Green co-produced and wrote the teleplay for the original film, and the affection she and everyone involved with the project had for Catherine Marshall's book cames across in every frame, in every episode.

This series could break your heart one moment and uplift your spirits the next. It maintained a high standard of quality. Christy was a warm and sometimes poignant examination of a yong woman's personal journey of faith. It was, as the saying goes, "too good" for television, but remained on the air long enough to leave its mark.

It also was a great role for Kellie Martin, of "Life Goes On" fame. While she has found another good role as of late in a series of films as Samantha Kinsey, mystery lover and owner of a mystery book store, "Christy" will probably always be the role she will be most identified with. Fans have been waiting a long time for this one and it's a pleasant surprise to see it is finally being released. A must have for those who enjoy the best television has to offer.
