Item description for Reluctant Burglar (To Catch a Thief) by Jill Elizabeth Nelson...
Overview Desiree's murdered father was an art thief. Can she preserve the family business, please her heavenly Father, avoid death threats, and trust FBI Special Agent Tony Lucano all at the same time?
Publishers Description The Art of Art Thievery
When Hiram Jacobs is murdered, the responsibility for his internationally renowned security company falls upon his daughter, Desiree. But a container full of stolen paintings screams the ugly truth—that her father was a thief. Option A: Turn the goods over to the law, disgrace her father’s name, destroy their business, put people out of jobs, and embarrass international museums with the fact that they have been displaying clever forgeries. Option B: Surrender the art to the bad guys. But then she becomes an unwilling accomplice to the thieves, and her father’s murderer would walk free. Worse, a death threat warns her not to cooperate with federal agents. Can she trust God to guide her down the right path when no option seems right…let alone safe?
Art stole her heart…
Now can she return the favor?
If Desiree Jacobs knows anything, it’s art. Her father, whose security company is internationally renowned, taught her everything he knew. Most of all, he taught her about honor. Integrity. Faith. So surely God will forgive her for despising the one man determined to destroy her father’s good name?
Special Agent Tony Lucano knows Hiram Jacobs is an art thief. But what he can’t figure out is Desiree. Is she the innocent victim…or a clever accomplice?
Then Hiram is murdered. And along with his company, he leaves Desiree a hidden container full of stolen paintings. But she can’t admit her father was a thief! That would destroy their business, put people out of jobs, and embarrass international museums that have been displaying clever forgeries. No, she must find out why her honest father would turn criminal. And she must return the priceless art to the rightful owners without their knowledge. Even if it means facing down a ring of cutthroat art thieves…or accepting help from the man she most distrusts.

Story Behind the Book
“One night I woke up, my whole body tense, after dreaming that a woman had snuck into a home in the middle of the night to return a genuine painting that had been stolen and replaced by a clever forgery. I knew little about her except that she was an expert at what she did, and if she was caught, disaster would follow. My imagination began to play with that nugget. I love stories where people risk much to do the right thing, and I feel sick whenever I hear of art or antiquities desecrated or stolen. Putting these elements together into a tale of intrigue—with a sassy heroine and an intense hero—came easily. I believe that capturing the imagination with a gripping story makes a most effective vehicle to convey thought-provoking realities.”

What an exciting read!! I happened upon this author completely by accident, and found I had purchased the second book in the series. I then found the first in the series here at this site.com, and I am very pleased with this product.
The main characters in the book are very capable, competent people in their fields of work. There is the twist through the book as to whether either will trust the other, yet they treat each other with respect. The drama in the story makes this book a very difficult one to put down. I love this author!! | | | | Movie Crown Affair (without all the sex) Very Similar Apr 6, 2008 |
Everything that Desiree Jacobs father Hiram taught her about honor, integrity, faith, and God is tested after she learns he is murdered. The foundation of her world is severely shaken. Who could she turn to for answers!! Desiree discovers hope in unexpected ways! How could she try to find out who killed her father, when the FBI is keeping close tabs on her every move. They still had her as a suspect in her father's murder. Unthinkable! She needed to help them find the killer. But how?
Desiree & her father owned a rein securities company and staged robberies to see how well the current security system was doing or could hold up under pressure. This reminded me of a movie that I really liked called "THE CROWN AFFAIR". In the movie it showed this very thing going on. I could imagine Desiree playing the lead and going thru elaborate measures to steal these paintings without anyone seeing what she did because there was a big enough distraction going on somewhere else. Then she would go thru just as much trouble to put the picture back again without anyone knowing. It was fascinating and suspenseful.
Things get messy and complicated when there is an attempt on Desiree's life. Why would someone try to kill her? She thought she was safe. Maybe she needed to ask for help after all? Things were getting beyond her control. Who could she turn to? Could she even think about asking God for help? It's been a while. Why not, she has tried everything else?
This was one fast passed interesting story. You will really get to like Desiree and root for her throughout the book. It has a satisfying ending. There are two other books in this series. The Reluctant Runaway and Reluctant Smuggler. The story of Desiree continues in these other exciting adventures. Nora St.Laurent Book Club Servant Leader [...]

When a ring of cutthroat art thieves begins to come after the paintings, she has to decide whether to trust Tony. She finds herself in danger and uncertain of whom she can trust. Can she uncover the ring of thieves and find out who killed her father without having to give the thieves what they seek?
This is the first book I've read in this series. It won't be the last. I loved this book. Desiree is such a wonderful character. I loved reading a book where the protagonist had morals and yet had spunk. The tension between Tony and Desiree really adds to the story. I am not an art lover, but I really enjoyed this story. The author did a fantastic job of getting the information to the readers about the various art, but without overwhelming them.
I can't wait to read more! I highly recommend this book.
| | | | Best Debut Novel Ever! Oct 17, 2007 |
Stolen art...murder...intrigue...terrorists...and love??? I've never met Jill Elizabeth Nelson, and before receiving her debut novel, The Reluctant Burglar, I knew nothing about her. Immediately upon receiving the book I knew this was going to be interesting. If I had been in the bookstore, the cover alone would have sold the book. Very cool, indeed!
Desiree Jacobs knows art because her father, Hiram Jacobs taught her everything he knows. Hiram also taught his daughter about honor, integrity, and faith. She loves and admires her father greatly.
But there's a problem...Special Agent Tony Lucano knows Hiram Jacobs is an art thief. He isn't sure about Desiree. She could be an innocent victim or a cunning accomplice.
The book opens with Desiree on one of her many escapes. See Desi's company doesn't just provide security for the art, she goes undercover, sometimes as an old woman, a young boy, anything she needs to do to see if she can steal the costly art pieces. If she can't break in then she knows the art is safe. Most of the time she's able to slip through the security cracks and leave investors shocked at their inept security. Think Sidney Briscoe from Alias. Desi has that kind of spunk and energy about her.
Not long after the beginning, Desi learns her father has been murdered. If the special agent is to be believed, her father was a thief. Desi can't reconcile that to the man she loved. Thus starting her confusing and dangerous whirlwind adventure to prove her father's innocence.
Where the author takes us on the journey is amazing. She crafted so many turns and twists with this plot that I was unable to put the book down. Albeit a late night, I devoured it in one setting.
As the book progresses, Jacobs and Lucano develop a friendship that has sparks and chemistry to boot. The reader is both cheering them on and worried about how they could ever be on the same side. This book was a rare treat. Not many debut novels are this well written, well-crafted and just plain good! I loved the book so much I emailed the author and told her what a great job she'd done. I also mentioned how much I'd love to see these characters on television. They were so real I already felt like they lived and breathed, and would love to see them on a weekly basis. ;)
