Reviews - What do customers think about Sleep: It Does A Family Good?
 | Book Review of Sleep it Does a Family Good by Dr. Archibald Hart Jun 8, 2010 |
I just loved reading Sleep: It Does a Family Good by Dr. Archibald Hart. It is an excellent book filled with good information and it is also a book that is written in a very readable manner.
Published by Tyndale Publishing in partnership with Focus on the Family, Dr. Hart shares how most families are so active and busy that they are about to burn out due to lack of rest. Following that, he shares how sleep is essential to healthy physical, emotional, and spiritual lives. Then, he shares some techniques and skills to increase the amount of sleep that you and members of your family get, and the benefits that will provide. He integrates his research on the importance of sleep and rest into a thorough theology of sleep and rest. Finally, Dr. Hart shows how integrate some ancient prayer practices into your life that will not only aid restful sleeping, but less anxious and busy living.
This book is countercultural. Our society teaches us that we can do it all, and do everything well. Our culture tells us to always look for ways to work harder, and to be better. Thus, we often rob ourselves of the sleep and rest that Scripture commends over and over again. God commands us to keep a Sabbath. The Lord Jesus offers the invitation, "Come unto me all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). In many ways our attemps to live without rest are an attempt to at best earn God's approval, and at worst build an altar to the God of self. In either instance, choosing not to sleep and not to rest is an affront to the grace of God that we are called not only to be saved by, but to live in each day as well.
One thing I loved about this book is that it is well-researched, but at a very accessable level. Thus, there are lots of little tidbits about sleep and rest that drew my attention. I kept reading something to myself, and then re-reading little parts of the book outloud to my wife after I read them.
Sleep: It Does a Family Good is a wonderful book and an easy read. It should find a place on the bookshelf of Christians who want to be happier and healthier. It should also find its way into the hands of any Christian leader who wants some simple tools to help people become happier with their lives and healthier in their relationships.
(I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for reviewing it for Tyndale Publishers. A favorable review was not required in order to get this book, just an honest one.)

I believe that Dr. Hart's book on sleep is so important. The research shows us that a lack of sleep is more damaging to our bodies and is a greater mortality risk than smoking, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Reports are also out that sleep also helps us ward of brain degeneration. It appears that there is a destructive crud which accumulates in the brain and that during sleep the brain does a pretty effective job of clearing the crud. This crud is also associated with Alzheimer's. READ THIS BOOK - change your sleeping habits and those of your family and you will reap the benefit and leave a legacy of health for your family. Excellent job Dr. Hart! | | | | A Book About Sleep does a body good! May 7, 2010 |
Is your family sleep deprived?
You may not even know if you are! In this book Dr. Archibald Hart talks about the signs and symptoms of people and families who are deprived of sleep and shares how to "fix" the problem as well. The main point is: "The family that sleeps well, lives well", and even "Just because your family doesn't feel tired doesn't mean that don't have a problem".
Dr. Hart's book is a fascinating look sleep and our view of sleep. I greatly appreciated his informative approach and simple ways of expressing the problem and presenting the solutions. I was also amazed at the amount of problems and physical ailments/disabilities that have a high probability of being linked to not enough sleep. But as amazed as I was, I believe it because I can see what a lack of sleep does in my own life.
I think this is a MUST READ for anyone, but especially for married couples and parents. There is plenty of practical application and tips to help you start sleeping better now. For parents, I highly recommend you read this along with the book: On Becoming Babywise.
Overall, I think this is a great book. There were a few things I didn't agree with the author on, but it was more application than theory and I would still highly recommend this book for EVERYONE!

Several weeks ago I blogged about getting the chance to review this book through the Tyndale Blog Network. As I mentioned then, sleep deprivation has been a real problem for me, and I was eager to read Sleep, It Does a Family Good (Dr. Archibald D. Hart).
I was not disappointed. This is a very practical, no-nonsense book that will probably answer more questions about sleep than you ever realized you had!
Sleep, It Does a Family Good is divided into three main sections:
Part 1--Understanding Your Family's Need for Sleep--relates some of the reasons we need sleep, the importance of dream sleep, and the consequences of sleep deprivation. Part 2--Determining Your Family's Sleep Problems--is written to help you assess how well your family is sleeping and to identify specific problems. Finally, Part 3--Overcoming Your Family's Sleep Deprivation--contains detailed, practical strategies to help you solve your family's sleep problems. Part 3, by the way, is approximately as long as the first two parts combined.
I've done a fair amount of reading about sleep deprivation and solving sleep problems, but I still learned a lot from this book. I appreciate that Dr. Hart conveys research findings in a way that's accessible to readers. I also appreciate that nearly all of the solutions he offers are natural, realistic, and affordable to try. After I take some notes from this book, I'm going to pass it along to a sleep-deprived friend!
Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book, at no cost to me, from Tyndale House Publishers. All opinions here are my own. | | | | Sleep is a Necessity! May 3, 2010 |
Sleep. With the right amount, our lives can be seemingly perfect, but too much or too little will leave us begging for our bed--or worse, leave us face down on our desks at two in the afternoon when we are supposed to be diligently working. YIKES! Talk about a two-edged sword. In this book Dr. Archibald D. Hart discusses a multitude of aspects of sleep, from why we need it, to what a sleep cycle entails, to how we can improve our sleep. From explanations to tips, Dr. Hart covers them all.
As a mother of three kids, sleep has been hard to come by for about the past five years. When I saw the title of this book I knew it was imperative that I read it. I must say that I was not disappointed. Dr. Hart offers a comprehensive argument that turns the current belief that less sleep is better on its head and instead promotes the truth that humans need rest. Without rest, we wilt at best and fail at worst.
This book is very informative and I would recommend that any mom read this book whether she is dealing with her own sleep issues or that of her spouse or children. A very enlightening book, this title was also well-written and easy to understand | | | Write your own review about Sleep: It Does A Family Good
