Item description for Commentary-Romans-Galatians (Expos Bible Comm) by Frank E. Gaebelein, & Murray Harris...
Overview INCLUDES ROMANS, I AND II CORINTHIANS, AND GALATIANS
Contributors to Volume 10 are: Everett F. Harrison (Romans), W. Harold Mare (1 Corinthians), Murray J. Harris (2 Corinthians), and James Montgomery Boice (Galatians).
Publishers Description The Gold Medallion Award-winning Expositor's Bible Commentary is a major contribution to the study and understanding of the Scriptures. Providing pastors and Bible students with a comprehensive and scholarly tool for the exposition of the Scriptures and the teaching and proclamation of their message, this twelve-volume reference work has become a staple of seminary and college libraries and pastors' studies worldwide. The seventy-eight contributors come from the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand, and from many denominations, including Anglican, Baptist, Brethren, Methodist, Nazarene, Presbyterian, and Reformed. They represent the best in evangelical scholarship committed to the divine inspiration, complete trustworthiness, and full authority of the Bible. The Expositor's Bible Commentary uses the New International Version for its English text, but also refers freely to other translations and to the original languages. Each book of the Bible has, in addition to its exposition, an introduction, outline, and bibliography. Notes on textual questions and special problems are correlated with the expository units; transliteration and translation of Semitic and Greek words make the more technical notes accessible to readers unacquainted with the biblical languages. In matters where marked differences of opinion exist, commentators, while stating their own convictions, deal fairly and irenically with opposing views.VOLUMES AND CONTRIBUTORSVolume 1Introductory Articles: General, Old Testament, New TestamentVolume 2Genesis: John H. Reviews - What do customers think about Commentary-Romans-Galatians (Expos Bible Comm)?
 | Great books from a great seller Jan 5, 2010 |

Included in the exegetes are Jim Boyce, Murray J Harris, W. Harold Mare and Everett F Harrison.
Everett Harrison brilliantly renders the difficult passage in Roman 8:28-30
'Paul seldom refers to the love of God on the part of the saints (1 Cor 2:9; 8:3). Nor does he introduce it here as the ground for the benefit he has been describing, for it is not meritorious, but simply a response to the divine love and grace. The called are not those who are merely invited to respond to the proclamation of the Gospel; they are called according to God's electing purpose. This calling is further explained in terms of foreknowledge and predestination. Observe also that we are called according to purpose, not according to foreknowledge. Verse 30 states the various steps involved in the realization of the divine purpose.'
Harrisons exegesis of Romans 8:29 (see also Phil 3:10) is commendable:
'Paul presents two aspects of that conformity. By a sharing in the sufferings of Christ that is based on having the mind of Christ, the believer is gradually being made into His likeness. This is the essence of sanctification. From these passages we learn that fellowship with Christ in His sufferings is the prelude to sharing with Him in His glory.' p 98
A foundationally sound and Reformed commentary.
*'Satan has put his hand upon a real weakness - man's association of divine love with temporal rewards.' George Matheson - RMB 1:352
*John Murray's commentary on Romans 12:2 is eloquent: 'Sanctification is a process of revolutionary change in that which is the centre of consciousness. This sounds a fundamental note in the biblical ethic. It is the thought of progression and strikes at stagnation, complacency, pride of achievement so often characterizing Christians. It is not the beggarly notion of second blessing that the apostle propounds but that of constant renewal.' 2:114
| | | | Review of set more than specific volume Sep 6, 2007 |
Let me start by saying that I have owned the full 12-volume set for about a year and use it quite frequently as a resource. I've used this particular volume as a reference, but have not taught through a book using this commentary yet. However, as there seem to be no competent reviews on the set as a whole, I did want to add my impressions of this terrific resource.
I can say that I'm very satisfied with my purchase of the 12 volumes in this set. Every portion has been quite helpful, and this is an amazingly simple and inexpensive way to assemble a good library of commentaries on the entire Bible. Obviously the commentaries are not as thorough as one may find in other series, such as the excellent (although not yet quite complete) "New International Commentary on the New Testament" or a similar series. However, for most Christians who teach or lead small groups in their churches, this set can serve as a great resource to get started with, and one that can easily be supplimented with specific volumes that treat a book of the Bible in greater depth as those books are needed. Additionally, this resource can be more useful than a larger volume in situations where one is interested in looking at a few chapters of scripture at a time, or where one just needs to understand what a verse or two might mean. Thanks to the very clear and practical verse by verse organization, it's a terrific tool to do just that.
Also, I will add that (at the time of this writing) it should be possible to buy the entire set for around $150 or less, so I would suggest shopping a bit if you plan to purchase all 12 volumes.
Strongly recommended.
