From page one of Thicker than Blood it is obvious that Christy Williams' life is a mess. Not that it should be from outward appearances. She has a job she was made to fill and is approaching genuine acceptance by her superiors. The man she has been seeing and working with is wealthy and intelligent. And, she gets to spend her days with the best, perhaps the only friends she has ever known - books. But Thicker than Blood deals with what lurks behind appearances. It is about the secrets we tend to bury hoping they will never be known, the supposedly small compromises we make in ethics and truthfulness, and the excuses we make for failing to do the right thing when it matters most.
As her life spins out of control, Christy finds herself fleeing to the one place she has carefully avoided for fifteen years. It is the place where she saw her parents' lives end in needless tragedy and where she abandoned her sister, determined to live her own life on her own terms. But even that is not all is it seems. There are deeper reasons she has been running her entire her adult life, allowing herself to fall into abusive relationships with one man after another, and hiding behind the very thing that killed her parents and destroyed her life. Now Christy has no choice but to return to a sister she is sure hates her and a horror with which she has never been reconciled.
C.J. Darlington's debut novel was the winner of The Christian Writer's Guild's Operation First Novel and from the writing it is obvious why. The prose and pacing are crisp and the message of forgiveness clear. The only reason I gave her first outing four stars is because I wanted something left to give when C.J.'s next novel appears. I expect that much from her. Be warned, Thicker than Blood deals with some pretty weighty issues in an entertaining yet powerful way. It's hard to believe that C.J. was only fifteen years old when she first began to craft this story of abuse, betrayal, reconciliation, and redemption. Our hats are off to you C.J. for all your years of hard work, perseverance, dedication, and love for the craft of writing.
