We want a new format for getting Christian perspectives. NOOMA is the new format. It's short films with communicators that really speak to us. Compact, portable, and concise. There's a popular bumper sticker that reads "God Bless America," but hasn't America already been blessed? It's easy for us to fall into a mindset of viewing "our" world as "the" world, because it's all we general see. We're constantly bombarded with images of the latest styles and models of everything, and it can easily leave us feeling like what we have isn't enough because we see people that have even more than us. But how does what we have compared to what most people in the world have? Maybe what we have is enough; maybe it's more than enough. Maybe God has blessed us with everything we have so we can bless and give to others. Please Note, Community Descriptions and notes are submitted by our shoppers, and are not guaranteed for accuracy. |

Reviews - What do customers think about NOOMA: Rich (V13)?
 | An Important Reminder. Feb 27, 2007 |
In RICH, the 13th video in his Nooma series, Rob Bell speaks about the materialism of our culture and the extreme wealth that almost all Americans possess, as compared to others in the world. He begins by talking about a bumper sticker he sees frequently on cars in his area, the one that says "God Bless America." He comments how that every time he sees that he is reminded that God has already blessed America.
Bell reminds us that if you have a roof over your head, a job, and own a car then you are rich because most people in the world don't have those things. I'm not sure where Bell took all of his statistics from and I am sure they are a little off. However, they aren't very far from the truth. For example, he says that only 8% of the people in the world own an automobile. I believe the percentage is a little higher (around 10-12%) and varies by what your definition of "owning" something is (sometimes people who lease a car, for example, are included in such statistics). But even if the figures aren't completely accurate, they are close, and can be astonishing when one thinks about it (probably more than $20 billion dollars a year is spent by Americans on ice cream).
To those who have been given much, much is required. We live in a rich culture, but none of it is really ours. We are stewards of all that is given to us. How then should we live? Linking this with some verses from Ephesians, Bell points out that we should do good works and be generous with all that has been given to us.
I've only seen a few of the Nooma videos (this was the third one I've seen) and I highly recommend them. I especially liked how the car was used throughout the video. It was an excellent visual representation of everything that Bell talks about during the film. The series works quite well as an introduction to a sermon, a youth group meeting, or just a discussion among friends. Living in America, it can be easy to forget how wealthy and rich we all are. Watching RICH reminds us of many of the things that advertising and media would have us forget. Also, all proceeds from the purchase of RICH are being donated to charities to help the poor. We live in a wealthy and blessed country. Will you share your wealth to have a "rich" life with others? | | | | A perspective on being rich... Nov 15, 2006 |
In Nooma #12 (Rich), Rob Bell speaks to our culture's tendencies toward overindulgence and materialism. The statistics are astonishing. Only 8% of people in the world own an automobile. It's hard to imagine that, when our culture has so much. Americans spend 20 billion dollars a year on ice cream. Well, maybe that's not as surprising as the former. But it's something to think about.
He mentions seeing signs that say "God Bless America." The reality is that, America (and Americans in general) have been greatly blessed. He continually returns to the idea, that those who are "blessed" and have much should give to those who are in need.
But the best thing about the making of this DVD is that Rob is practicing what he preaches. The liner notes claim that 100% of sales from this DVD will be given to charitable organizations who will help those who are in need of the basics. Thanks Rob, for not only sharing a great message, but also showing a great example.
Pick up this DVD and the entire Nooma series for your own growth, or to lead your young adult or senior high youth group. It is totally worth it. And as already mentioned, buying this volume will go to help those in life who are in need. | | | | amazing Aug 5, 2006 |
