STUFF CHRISTIANS LIKE is a tongue in cheek look at Christianity, welcoming you to the funny side of faith.
Mr. Acuff says on the back cover that STUFF CHRISTIANS LIKE is a field guide to all things Christian. And some of the ideas included in this book are actually good--like designing a Bible with a drink bottle built into the spine. If this comes out on the market, I know where the idea came from.
And having a direct deposit for tithe is not such a bad idea either. Actually, it'd be pretty handy to have a debit machine in church so you could just scan your card and punch in the amount you want to give. Why hasn't anyone thought of this before?
But included with the "Hey, this is a good idea" things are also things that are laugh out loud funny. Like the guy who shows up at the riverside baptism and decides, hey, I'm here. I'll just get baptized too, or the section where the author talks about Love Offerings.
There are also illustrations in this book to help bring the point across. As well as checklists so you can see if your worship leader is metro.
I thoroughly enjoyed thumbing through STUFF CHRISTIANS LIKE and am going to let my husband (a pastor) read through it before I pass it on. This is a great tongue in cheek book that will keep you entertained and maybe open your eyes about a few things. | | | | ROFL Jun 4, 2010 |
| I think I could just type ROFL ROFL ROFL for however many characters I'm allowed but I'll attempt something helpful to do this book justice. I'm a PK/MK and am currently on staff at a mega church and purchased two of these books, one for me and one for my sis. We love Pastors Kids Gone Wild (been there, done that). Since Jonathan is also a PK, I know he has had a front row seat to the goofy stuff from day 1. He's simply hilarious in his observations, spot on. And why can't we laugh at ourselves? It doesn't make us any less saved or our faith any less true to laugh at the goofy stuff we do as the Church. I think it's far better to poke fun at the saved than mock the lost who truly are living a tragedy. Top five so far (I'm not yet done with the book) are Casserole of Hope, 7 Types you Meet in a Prayer Circle, Metro-Sexual checklist, R-rated Movies, and Avoiding Complaining to Your Missionary Friend. I'm a big fan of laughter as the best medicine and this book is Prescription #1. | | | | A Sometimes Funny Satire Jun 1, 2010 |
I was mildly aware of the Stuff Christians Like blog [...], but I never thought it was that funny or interesting. I've been around the Christian marketplace for a long, long time, and that self-effacing, semi-sacrilegious writing may seem novel, but it isn't. I remember The Wittenberg Door magazine (kept behind the circulation counter at Multnomah Bible College's library), and now hear about [...], a Christian The Onion-wannabe. While mildly amusing, the satire grows old quickly. In spite of this, I downloaded the audio version of Stuff Christians Like to listen to in the car and walking the dog.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. Acuff's observations were funny jabs at some of the Christian culture's silliness or non-sequiturs. As good satire should do, many of his remarks should cause us to examine what we do and why we do it. There were times that I felt he went too far in his criticisms, sounding more like a outside critic than a comic observer. This crossed the line into taking the weighty things of God too lightly.
Other times, his jokes were too labored. Please, no more long lists offering points for metrosexual worship leaders, hip youth pastors, or whatever the other person-du jour is. Perhaps this is a book to read in small doses over a month. Spread out the satire. Otherwise, it is too much too soon.
The one overarching positive note is that Jonathan Acuff is a talented writer. He has a unique style and voice that is evident throughout the book. I'd love to read what he could do with short stories or a novel. I'd certainly read it. | | | | I like "Stuff Christian's Like" May 29, 2010 |
| The book "Stuff Christian's Like" is so funny that you will be laughing outloud all the way; sometimes laughing so hard you're crying. The author, Jonathan Acuff, is spot on in identifying Christian language, habits, processes, and other "stuff" that adds humor and satire to the book. Very enjoyable. | | | | Without Jonathan Acuff, I would still have SCS (Somber Christian Syndrome) May 27, 2010 |
"Stuff Christians Like" need not a lengthy review or explanation, other than that it is awesome. Similar to the kind of awesome you experience when you find 20 bucks in your winter jacket pocket, or realize that your huge term-paper you thought was due tomorrow isn't due for another week. It's precisely the right amount of happiness needed in an otherwise overly-melodramatic world. Jonathan Acuff makes me laugh to tears, but also points out some of the ridiculous things I get caught up in the Christian faith.
Oh, and his scorecards come in handy. I now know every meal that is appropriate to pray for. | | | Write your own review about Stuff Christians Like
